WEEK 4: PROTEST POSTERS

WEEK 4:  PROTEST POSTERS
SMOKING KILLS
Smoking Kills
This week we were assigned the task to create a series of posters defining a message or belief that we were passionate about. The cause I chose was to quit smoking. I believe that smoking does not only kill people but families, social life and creates financial problems. My target audience was middle aged people between the ages 30-50, some of my posters focused more on parents.

My three sketches on the bottom allowed me to quickly put down my ideas. The first two drawings focused on adults with children. The first one displaying how smoking can cause financial issues and can result negatively on the rest of the family. Cigarettes are expensive and have no benefits to them.

The second sketch displayed secondhand smoking. Secondhand smoking is when a person beside someone smoking receives the same amount of damage as the smoker just from breathing in their smoke. This drawing outlines how parents who smoke with kids around have a negative impact on the kids health and well being too. 'YOU SMOKE, THEY SMOKE" was written to clearly outline how you are killing your child just by smoking around them.

My final sketch was of a cigarette burning and its smoke outlining lungs with tearing eyes. This was a way to metaphorically show how your lungs feel about the constant smoke. I ended up choosing this sketch as my final as it aims at all smokers not just one particular group. It displays how smoking affects everyones lungs no matter what the age. Up the top of the page are my final two posters the first one in colour and the second one in black and white.

Tools: My sketches were drawn by a simple 2B pencil.
My final posters I used illustrator as it allowed me to play with colour and line weights.

Reflection: I was happy with my final designs, however, I had some trouble adding detail to the lungs. In future I wish I could add further detail to the lungs and make the smoke look more realistic. I hope to get better at my sketches and more confident using illustrator. I drew inspiration from Pinterest pages such as 'Design Week'. It displays a range of different types convincing protest posters and posts that helped design my final poster.
